Avaya MSP - The Policy on Avaya Maintenance Software Permissions

Avaya's servicing strategy is to provide Service Agreements for those products manufactured and/or sold by Avaya. Customers have expressed a desire to participate in maintaining their equipment and Avaya Authorized Partners have requested maintenance capabilities to service their end user customers.

Use of the Maintenance Software Permissions (MSPs), Avaya’s proprietary Right-to-Use maintenance software, gives the customer the maintenance capabilities they need to respond to some alarms, and aids in trouble isolation procedures. Authorized Partners, through the use of the DADMIN login, can maintain their customer's switches and respond to more of their customers’ troubles.

For all Definity and Communication Manager Systems CM4.0 and earlier MSPs can only be activated with purchase of a Service Agreement. As Avaya transitions to a more software centric strategy, MSPs will be provided with the purchase and license activation on Communication Manager 5.0 and subsequent releases. This strategy change will provide customers with more flexibility in maintaining their systems. Although this change makes it easier for the customer to utilize MSPs, they still remain Avaya’s proprietary Right-to-Use software. This means, MSPs are not transferable or assignable, are governed by all license and Right-to Use language, and cannot be utilized by an Unauthorized Service Provider or Third Party. Avaya reserves the right to audit these conditions at any time as outlined in the product and customer agreements.

Avaya can add more value to the Service Agreement by enhancing the customer level password with MSPs for all Definity and Communication Manager Systems CM4.0 and earlier.. During the Warranty period, MSPs can be licensed if there is a pending Service Agreement. For CM5.0 and subsequent releases MSPs are available with the purchase and license of the software and can be activated by the customer or BusinessPartner with activation of the customer license file.

Avaya T&M Policy Change starting 7/1/2010

Effective July 1, 2010, customers, Partners and Partner customers who do not have a contractual relationship with Avaya on a product requiring support, will no longer have access to Per Incident Technical Support Services.

Avaya Global Support Services is updating the existing Maintenance Per Incident (Time & Materials) policies. Avaya will continue to provide T/M support to Avaya Maintenance Agreement customers, Partners and Partner customers who have a minimum Avaya Maintenance contract covering the product requiring support. In addition Per Incident services such as on-site support and out-of-hours support will be available to Avaya Maintenance customers and Partner customers with a minimum Avaya contractual relationship for the product requiring support.

With that said, you have a couple options to consider for support:
  1. Leverage the experience and expertise of an authorized Avaya BusinessPartner to help you get through your current support issues. More info at: http://www.avayaurgentsupport.com/.
  2. Learn what the options are and your minimum requirements to become current on Avaya Maintenance at: http://www.avayamaintenance.com/.
Remember, without any level of Avaya Maintenance agreement in place, you will no longer be able to get any type of support from Avaya directly. This also means third party service organizations will no longer have access to critical support capabilities on your systems called MSP (maintenance software permissions) required to properly maintain Avaya solutions.

Although these changes may be an adjustment for some legacy Avaya customers, it is really the "norm" when compared to the rest of the industry.  Avaya has delayed these types of policies to ease customers through.

How scalable is the Avaya G450 Gateway?

The Avaya G450 Media Gateway consists of a 3U high, 19” rack mountable chassis with field- removable Supervisor Main Board Module, Power Supplies, Fan Tray, DSP resources and memory. It has eight Media Module slots that host a combination of interface boards to support T1/E1, ISDN-BRI, WAN interfaces, digital or analog telephones and analog trunks.

Modular DSP Resources are available as daughterboards for Main Board Module. These daughterboards can be implemented in increments. The maximum capacity is 320 channels. Avaya S8800 Server with Communication Manager Messaging Install Issue

Came across an issue when installing a new S8800 server with CM 5.2.1 running embedded CMM (IA770). Even though "messaging" was enabled (from Server Maintenance/Messaging Software), the Process Status still stated it was down. 

The problem is from a file not being installed during the CM 5.2.1 install.  Even though we used the same CM 5.2.1 CD for an S8300 server successfully, the S8800 server install with the same CD did not put in the needed "voip_b11.cfg" file.  This file is needed to link the CM to the CMM via IP Address.

You can check if you are having the same problem by checking the Administration/Messsaging/Switch Link Admin screen (via browser) and confirm the following:

Link Addresses
Messaging [correct IP Address for messaging]
Switch [correct procr IP address for server]

NOTE:  Our issue showed the Messaging with a 192.11.13.6 (wrong) and the Switch as blank.

Hopefully, this will save you several hours of installation time if you happen to come across the same problem....

Avaya just released a new LITE client for the one-X Mobile app for iPhone.

This is not the full version of one-X Mobile, however it has many cool features and does not require the backend one-X Mobile server. You do need to configure the following on Communication Manager for the app to work:
1. Exension to Cellular (EC500)
2. Feature Name Exension (FNE)
3. Feature Access Code (FAC)

The app is a free download that works with an Avaya business solution that is already licensed for EC500/UC Standard Edition+.

Nemertes: Avaya Leads Cisco with Lower TCO - 2009 Study Says

According to an independent analyst survey of 1,400 customers, Nemertes concluded that Avaya is the lowest-cost IP telephony provider for deployments over 250 users:


Avaya has a proven lower 3-year TCO. Avaya is 36% less costly to own over 3 years versus Cisco (Capital plus Operational costs).

Cisco has a higher 3-year TCO. Cisco is 1.5x more costly to own and operate over 3 years versus Avaya (Capital and Operational Expenses).
Cisco requires 55% more staff than Avaya. In studying "Average Number of Full-Time Equivalent Employees Devoted to VOIP, by Vendor" – Avaya requires only five (5) people on average, while Cisco requires nine (9).


“The underlying message here is that Avaya is easier to manage than Cisco, that its customers are better trained, or both,” according to Robin Gareiss, Executive Vice President & Sr. Founding Partner of Nemertes Research, and author of the 2009 paper “True Cost of Voice Over IP”.


Nemertes measured the true cost of voice over IP by capturing customer data on implementation, capital and annual operational costs. The 2007 Nemertes issue paper “Business Case for Voice Over IP” showed Cisco TCO was 47% more expensive based on a similar customer survey.


Also as a result of this survey, Avaya has been named as the top overall provider of Unified Communications (UC), and subsequently received the PilotHouse Award for Best Unified Communications Provider for 2009 from Nemertes Research. “The common thread among participants that favor Avaya is its technology, integration capabilities, and management tools.” According to Irwin Lazar Vice President, Communications Research, Nemertes Research.


Vendors were ranked in five categories: value, technology, customer service, integration and management tools. Avaya received top scores in technology, integration and management tools and ranked second in value and customer service. “One of the key strengths of Avaya is they understand high availability,” says the IT director of a large utility company. Cisco came in second, followed by Microsoft and IBM.


The goal of the Nemertes PilotHouse Awards program is to determine how well vendors perform in the eyes of their business customers. Results are entirely based on the views and experiences of actual customers of unified communications vendors. There is no vendor sponsorship of the research.

Avaya CM5.2 ESS Server Successfully Tested for both PN/H.248 Connected Networks!

NEW in Avaya Communication Manager Release 5.2 and later, the capabilities of ESS servers are enhanced to support connection of IP devices to the Processor Ethernet interface as well as to C-LAN interfaces located in G650 (port network) gateways.


An Enterprise Survivable Server (ESS) can use its Processor Ethernet interface to support IP devices such as H.248 Media Gateways, H.323 Media Gateways, IP Adjuncts, IP telephones, IP trunks, and SIP trunks. The ESS can optionally control port networks (G650 Media Gateways) through IPSI at the same time. When there are no port networks in the configuration, ESS may provide the equivalent benefit of an LSP. The ESS can be duplicated, providing additional redundancy to the survivability of the system.


For Processor Ethernet on duplex servers to work, you must assign the Processor Ethernet interface to the PE Active Server IP Address (IP-alias) and not the server unique address. The NIC assigned to the Processor Ethernet interface must be on a LAN connected to the main server.


- If the LSP or ESS registers to the C-LAN on the main server, the C-LAN must have IP connectivity to the LAN assigned to the NIC used for Processor Ethernet on the ESS.


- If the LSP or ESS registers to the Processor Ethernet on the main server, the Processor Ethernet on the main server must have IP connectivity to the LAN assigned to the NIC used for Processor Ethernet on the ESS.

Avaya Gratuitous ARP

In Avaya CM 5.2 the"Alias" IP Address (not Virtual MAC) for PE requires Gratuitous ARP to be ENABLED on your router.  

The way Avaya lets everything on the same subnet know (at a layer 2 level) of a change is by sending out a Gratuitous ARP so the new MAC address is known. Cisco by default disables Gratuitous ARP which causes a delay by waiting for the ARP cache in the router to expire on the subnet before the new packets can successfully travel.

Confirm Gratuitous ARP is enabled and accepted by your routers to avoid any issues.
